Work WTF

Story I've told a few folks, repeated here for sheer WTF!

I work with documentation; we do a lot of layout and checking and we work with a lot of localized (translated) documents. It's picky work, and unless you are a tad anal-retentive or simply like fixing problems, it's really not for you.  It generates a lot of paper. I pitch mine as soon as I can because I have the smallest cube in the group and I'm messy enough as it is. :-)

There's this Guy. He got hired on at the recommendation of a coworker. He just...doesn't get it. He acts like the job is a joke, does the absolute minimum, takes my edits as "suggestions", and has been really hitting on the new female hire. We've called him and her on it, and she's been really good--booting him out of her cube, shutting him down when he tries to do marathon IM sessions with her, etc. He doesn't seem to get it. Friday (yesterday), it's slow, so he decides it's cube-cleaning day. He removes the old computer and such with much drama and noise. Great! His cube is really nice!

My boss V comes back from a meeting and I stick my head in to ask her something. I look down. "....you sure threw a lot of stuff away."
"I haven't thrown anything away today." We both look through the recycle bin. "Did the cleaning folks accidentally switch your basket with a full one?" Keep looking through, and sure enough, all the docs in the basket (thown out with binder clips and paperclips still attached) belong to the Guy.

I have to go to his cube and confront him. "Did you throw this away in V's cube? Are you nuts?"  "Mine was full!" (It's about 3/4 full.) "What about the one in the printer area next door?" "I used that too!" (Checked. 3/4 full as well.) My boss pointedly tells him to empty the one in her cube into one of the FOUR ENORMOUS SHRED BINS on this floor alone. He's all "Why?" I look at him. "Do you have any idea how disrespectful that is?" He stomps off.

On what planet is it OK to dump your trash in your direct supervisor's cube? (Or, you know, anyone's cube without their permission?) It's the week before your review, and she's already P.O.ed at you for a lot of other stuff. Seriously, what planet are you from?

And in other news: got my hair cut today. Will do my sales taxes tomorrow. Discovered that my water heater has a leak (thank goodness I'm in a rental unit and they'll take care of it on Monday). Worked out three times this week. Start classes Monday.

Wow, what a dick. Maybe he'll get a crappy review and find someplace else where they'll "appreciate" him. Heh.

takes my edits as "suggestions"

When I was in graduate school, there was a young guy who had a desk in the same bullpen as me, and he treated comments from our draftsperson the same way. She was nice, and she said, "You might want to... [long list of changes he needed to make to bring his mechanical drawings up to spec]." Well, he *didn't* want to, so he didn't make the changes. The guy in charge of the machine shop, where they had to *build* the stuff he'd designed, was considerably less polite about it. Heh. Young Guy comes to me, stupefied. I said to him, "Dude, [draftperson]'s *nicer* than I am. She isn't going to go upside your head and say, 'Do it or else.' But just because she says, 'You may want to...' doesn't mean you actually have a *choice*."

Of course, the difference between Young Guy and your Guy was that Young Guy really was just clueless, and he learned his lesson, real fast. *g*

Yeah, I get the impression that all the talks V has had with him just go over his head, since she's Very Southern--polite to a fault up until she stops being polite at all.

I? Am considerably more blunt, which freaks him out in another way (why is this woman being mean to me?), but he doesn't yet see me as Boss. But he will. Ohhhh, he will. Bwah-hah-hah-hah-hah!

Bwah-hah-hah!

Or, he won't be around.

Idiot!
