I have now signed approximately 1 million pieces of paper. I have a good loan rate, the insurance quote is reasonable, and so far there appear to be no bumps in the road. The appraisal is happening this week; I should know Friday or Monday.

They've replaced the vanity in the smaller bathroom, which is nice.

I've been getting weird quotes on moving. Seriously, they're ranging from $400- $1000. "Oh, it will take at least 8 hours to move you!" Bullshit. It's a small 2-bedroom apartment. I'm going to move all my clothes and art and electronics and loose things (vacuum, etc.) myself. It's going to be boxes and furniture, and while I will have a LOT of boxes--I have a LOT of books--I really don't have much in the way of furniture. It's not going to take any 8 hours, I assure you. I'm going with one of the hourly rate guys, I think. They seem the most efficient. But if anybody local has suggestions, please pass them along.

The plan is to have a packing/move loose stuff party a couple of days before the move and pay a cleaning service the day after. Then the next week is FenCon.

...and I just got a notice that I am a possible marrow match. Why now?

All of my experience with moving (the kind of moving where you have to get quotes from a moving company) were interstate moves, and the rules are different there, but the main rule of thumb I remember was to watch out for bids that seem unrealistically low. It's a classic moving scam for a mover to underestimate the weight of your stuff, and then on the day of the move insist that you have to pay some exorbitant rate for the excess weight.

Re: bone marrow donations, I've been contacted for that twice over the years, and it never panned out (and I was bummed, because I really wanted to do it!), so you're probably in the clear.

I got about half a dozen quotes and ended up going with one of the hourly rate offers, not the cheapest one, but the one that gave me the most free stuff (wardrobe boxes, etc.) The difference per hour wasn't much -- $5/hr -- and they scaled by 15-minute segments and would pay all parking tickets (NYC move, not nothing). I was very, very glad I did -- what I ended up moving was not at all what I thought I would be moving, both in content and quantity, and I would have gotten creamed on the fixed-rate estimates because of the overages.

On the day of, they actually showed up with a larger truck and an extra guy and the hourly rate was more, but they finished much faster, so the overall price was less.

(I had a ton of boxes -- I moved eight bookcases' worth of books, plus an insane amount of kitchen gear and pantry stuff. You will always need more boxes than you think you do.)

I've asked Engineer if he remembers who we used...we had them bring over the contents of a fair sized storeroom, including a couch, table and four chairs, bed, dresser, and chest, washer and dryer, and I'm pretty sure it was less than $200.
