This came through my email, and I've already sent in my suggestion. (We *know* McKay and Sheppard both would totally be behind this, right? As would Xander....) It probably has a snowball's chance in Hell, but who knows? If enough folks nominate him, it would be massively cool.

USS Robert A. Heinlein?

The Navy is looking for a name for it's new Zumwalt class destroyer. They don't have RAH's name listed. Since he graduated from the Naval Academy (class of '29) and since his 100th birthday is coming up it would be nice for the Navy to honor him.

If you go to this link  and look at the right-hand side of the page. You will find a list of names. You can click "none of the above" and then click "submit your choice." This will pop open (at least on my computer) a MS Outlook mail page. Write in "USS Robert A. Heinlein". It's very simple and a wonderful way to honor a very great man.

Thanks (and feel free to pass this along).

Heinlein was something of a literary father figure to me as a kid. You can go into the whole "weird sex, freaky later books" riff I hear from so many women when I admit to liking his stuff, but the fact of the matter is that his SF juveniles were among some of the best of the genre. Of course his protagonists were boys! He was writing this stuff in the 40's and 50's forcryinoutloud! But his girls were never (or very rarely) wimps. They were often much smarter than the boys. (And if I wanted grrl power SF/Fantasy, there was always Andre Norton.) And his short fiction! More writers should read it. Tight, edited to a fare-the-well, and generally very very good.

I started donating blood because of him. My first donation was at ....hmmm, must have been the Denver WorldCon in '82? And I hate needles. The only reason I started--because it was a Robert A Heinlein blood drive. And I've been donating fairly regularly ever since. (I'm also on the marrow donor list. I may not be AB+, but I get calls from the Blood and TIssue Center periodically, as my blood doesn't contain some common protein marker, so it's suitable for very teeny tiny babies. Which is either kinda cool or kinda weird, depending on your POV.)

And I was sorely tempted to tell the Navy, "Think of all the gear you could sell to the SF geeks out there! Not to mention every third engineer/physicist/computer tech." 'Cause I would totally buy a USS Robert A. Heinlein shirt!

And since you've read all this? A reward! (But, um, don't go to the homepage. "Not Worksafe" doesn't even begin to describe it.)
