Last week was a busy one for me. Thursday and Friday I volunteered at the World Fantasy Convention, which was rather conveniently held about 5 minutes from my place. I helped run the green room (where the presenters could wind up/unwind before/after a panel). There was caffeine, munchies, etc. I supplied homemade banana bread, which got all these rave reviews. (It's just the Fannie Farmer recipie!) Met a lot of nice folks, including Peter S. Beagle, who is amazingly charming and much fun to talk to. I even sold a pendant to his agent, since I was working on pieces the whole time.
No, I didn't have a table in the dealer's room; I was told they 'already had a jeweler'. Guess what?? There were only book dealers there. Now, I don't mind if you tell me up front that you are limiting your vendors to book dealers only (which is really stupid--they didn't even have someone doing commemorative t-shirts), but please, bitch, don't lie to me. I was perfectly willing to spend $300 for a table, but instead I spent Saturday and Sunday at the Sun City Christmas show. Which made for a schizophrenic weekend, lemme tell ya.
Saturday sales were quite good, up 60% from last year, but Sunday it was like pulling teeth to make every sales. I swear, if one more well-dressed woman of a Certain Age came in, tried on everything, complimented me on my work , and then went to the end of the aisle to buy jewelry just like she could get at Chico's, I was gonna go postal. If the Celtic Festival and this show are sharing a weekend again next year, I'm doing the Celtic Festival. Much more my style, even if it is *ugh* outside.
But...I got to eat with S.M Stirling and his wife Jan--introduced them to the Kerby Lane Cafe for breakfast! I also got to have BBQ with my buddy Stephen Dedman, up from Australia for the week. Chatted with Tim Powers, Nina Kiriki Hoffman, Jayme Blashke, Glen Cook, Esther Friesner, Jay Lake, and many others. Very nice, but between that and the craft show I was pretty tired of talking by Sunday evening.
You must go here to Threadless and look at the shirts. Register and buy through this link and I'll get credit! They have amazing stuff.
Also, deepdiscountdvd.com is having a 20% off sale. Use "SUPERSALE" at checkout to get the discount. If you do media mail the shipping is free. Sadly, this does not get me any credit, but I plan on buying the original SW trilogy, and the Pinky and the Brain box set.
