lillian13: (brain cell)

I had no jewelry class this week, as it's spring break. So what do I do in the evenings that I have free? Work out? Clean the apartment? Broker world peace?

...no. I come home, lie down on the couch, and fall asleep*. I wake up after about an hour and a half, get dinner, read my email, and go to bed. Tonight has been the first night this week that I haven't felt the need. (Though that may change.)

So this weekend, the first I've spent home in while, means I have plans. I'm getting the hair cut on Saturday, I have to vacuum and clean the place (sorry, cats), and haul some more stuff to Goodwill/Half Price books.

* To be fair, I started the week with a bad sleep deficit: I didn't get home from SXSWi selling shirts until 8:30 pm Sunday, and then I had to do laundry... Monday I was a zombie.

And Threadless is having another sale!

Taxes!

Taxes are done, baaaaybeee! (Takes victory lap around the apartment, scares cats.)

As per usual, the refund will go mostly into the car (and maybe the cats) this year. The wagon is paid for and needs to be encouraged to hold together for another 3 years, if at all possible.

Working at IkkiCon this coming weekend, if anyone wants any anime stuff.

Watching "History on a Bun" makes me want hot dogs like crazy. Good hot dogs. Dog Almighty, why are you only on the south side now? *sniffs*

Threadless is having a 3-Day sale through Wednesday.

Spotted in Austin: A Zombie Warning Sign.

Slinky the Lumpen Sidekick Cat does not approve of my furniture rearranging. He kept coming into the living room to tell me, and then flouncing out. He did not appreciate my giggles.

Ripley the Wonder Cat loves the new! open! spaces! and has been playing with all the toys that had been stowed under the furniture.

I now have piles of stuff I need to do something with.

Ah, well, back to work.

This tshirt made me laugh and laugh.

Nephew and I took the Huge Desk and the old TV cabinet to Goodwill last night. We were also going to take the drama!queen!dryer, but Nephew remembered a friend who really needed a washer and dryer. So I'm going to hold onto it for a while (not like it's really in the way on the porch) until he can come pick it up.

Nephew and I (along with a friend) got the Enormous TV set up last night. It's...really, really big. I now have to rearrange the apartment. And figure out why I can't get a video signal from the DVD player, only an audio one. And figure out where the stereo, etc. needs to go now that there is no longer a cabinet for them to live on.

Big Brother wants the old TV, so while I can't get as much money as I wanted for it, keeping goodwill flowing in the family is a bit more important.

....the count for schizophrenic weather days is now umpty-zillion. Yesterday: 80F. Today: 36F. Time to make spaghetti sauce!

I won an iPod Shuffle!

We're having our Employee Appreciation week; yesterday was the Health & Wellness Fair. I entered all the drawings, as you do, and this morning I had an email that I'd won a Shuffle! w00t!

(That brings me up to 3 iPods: my original 20Gb, which I never use any more and really should sell*; my wonderful Amusement Machine, the 160Gb video; and now the Shuffle. *boggles*)

And our company just got named to Fortune's '100 Best Companies to Work For' list for the 10th year in a row.

Amazon's Gold Box Deal today is the entire run of The Wire for $81.99.

* Anyone want to buy a 20GB iPod with a dock and unused earbuds?
lillian13: (geeky)

...for various values of junior high, anyway.

I got my second Swatch watch in the mail today. They were wildly popular when I was in junior high *cough*late '70s*cough*, but I only had the one. The popular and rich kids wore 2 or 3 at once.

I got one for Christmas, because they have resin cases and resin clasps. (I'm damn allergic to nickel--I get a rash with blisters!) I'd gotten tired of the Timex weirdness of needing a damned instruction book to set their watches, so I went looking at Swatches just for fun. Got a nice one with day/date and a large, very readable face that didn't look like something my grandpa would have worn.

I was jonesing for another watch, and kept looking at the Grandpa-Timex ones, because they were sturdy and had the day and date on them too (which I totally need since I never can remember either), when I looked up Swatch on amazon, since I had a clutch of gift certificates burning a hole in my virtual wallet. Found this one and grabbed it. The band is metal, but I'm hoping it's stainless steel. And it's nice and bright and cheerful and legible without being an Old Fogey Watch, which has become increasingly important *cough*bifocals*cough* as I get older.

...but I'm not wearing them at the same time. That would be tacky.

The State of Texas actually did something right for once. During the Tech Bust of 2000-2001 (oh how innocent we were then), they hired a bunch of coders and web developers and turned them loose on the tax collection website for the state. The result? I paid my sales taxes for the year in under 15 minutes, a chunk of which was spent calculating my total sales for the year.

*Is pleased.*

Looks like I don't have any jewelry shows until April or May. Depends on if the Violet Crown folks decide to do a spring show or not. I did discover that the Starving Artists Show I used to do in San Antonio has been replaced with a $200-a-booth "fine arts" show. Juried with Zapplication, which means I'd need much higher-resolution photos of my work than I do now. And pay a fee. Um, no. New show in this economy? Sorry, not doing it.

In the meantime, I'll be taking a chasing and repoussage class. I'm looking for good line art of a trilobite or dinosaur bones....

People keep telling me I should sell at Wiscon. Anyone out there gone to Wiscon?

You know where I want to go? (With money, of course.) Tuscon. In February. Maybe I'll be able to do it in a couple of years.

Heh. On the money front--about a month ago, one of my 2 remaining credit cards informed me that they were rate-jacking me. I called my credit union and explained what was going on and had the loan to pay the suckers off in about 10 minutes. So, instead of them getting my money for another couple of years, they don't. And if I have anything to say about it, Citi will never get my money ever again. So now I'm down to 1 credit card. Which I really want to get paid off ASAP. (We'll see if the car, etc. cooperates.)

Oh! Oh! My brother scored me a "new" dryer. Even brought it over and helped me install it. The old one is on the porch (until I'm sure the new one works OK). If everything is OK, I'll just borrow his truck and haul the old one down the street to Goodwill. Let them deal with the drama.

lillian13: (Default)

As I was sayin' to [livejournal.com profile] wolfshark the other day, this was the kind of year that made you want to decapitate it, burn the body, and bury it at a crossroads with a stake through its heart. I'm just sayin'.

Hm.

Ups: Obama! The carpal tunnel surgery was an unqualified success. People liked/bought my jewelry. I still have a job. Miraculously, none of my relatives died. My sister seems to have (finally) gotten her act together. While I didn't lose any weight, I didn't gain any, either. My blood pressure seems to be under control...and I finally talked to my doctor about my depression. So far, the meds seem to be helping, though I've been having issues with nosebleeds.

Downs: My best friend's brother died suddenly. My nephew has turned into an 18-year-old asshat. We lost a bunch of really talented people. The economy continues to suck. Work, while there, continues to bore and annoy me on a daily basis.

Media happiness: Criminal Minds, Supernatural, NCIS, Middleman, Leverage, Eureka, Burn Notice, True Blood, Dr Who, Iron Man, Wall-E, Cloverfield, Nation.

Media sadness: No more SGA, probably no more Middleman. Heroes. Indiana Jones and the Crystal Skull.

Resolutions: Only two. 1) work out at least 3 days a week. 2) Pay off the smaller credit card. That's it.

Tonight: Pizza, cable TV. Tomorrow: Tamales and black-eyed peas. Friday: Back to work.

Thankful for: All of you! You rock my world!

It was over 70F today, and humid. Tonight it's supposed to get to freezing, and tomorrow it's supposed to be in the 40's. I'm staying in and making cookies on Sunday.

I mailed off the last of the Christmas presents today. I hope I sent everyone their cards!

Then I did a Bad Thing--I went to Central Market without a list, and without eating first. I did buy only things I knew I would eat...I'm cooking my lovely small steak, and having a good red wine tonight. Mmmmm.

And, a meme!

You scored 80% masculine, 59% athletic, 73% exotic, and 56% refined!

You love a manly man and you don't have time for boys. You like someone who looks exotic and who takes care of his body and hygiene. That is a good idea in case you are trying to eat jello shooters off of his beautiful 6 pack. Someone like.....Jean-Claude Van Damme, Belgium's hottest export. But let's face it, the whole point of this was to look at a bunch of hot guys. If you liked what you saw, please rate my test!

Got the last of my Christmas shopping done (now all I have to do is make jewelry, ha-ha-ha-ha). Bought lots of books for my friend T's kids, and a couple of old favorites that might make him smile. I'll get that box off Monday or Tuesday. Started on the Christmas cards; should be done in a day or so. Got the lights up. Found the perfect hideous Christmas paper (SpongeBob is involved--be very afraid). Paid bills.

Made soup/stock from the turkey carcass; I have to peel off the fat tomorrow after it cools. Then it's turkey and dumplings time! I also made a cake for our admin's birthday.

The living room is now about 80% clean. I vacuumed and picked up and did 3 months worth of filing; I now need to sell the Giant Desk I Never Used so I can shift several pieces of furniture around. I'm going to tackle my bedroom after Christmas when all the presents I've been storing in there are distributed.

Went to a laundromat today and washed everything--clothes, table covers, jacket, mattress cover, bed pillows--while it was kind of pricey, I got it all done in less than 2 hours. I need to call around and see if anyone is interested in buying/taking away the dryer. It works, under protest, and makes my clothes smell weird. I'm tired of dealing with its mechanical dramatics and I want it out of here.

I'm also going to sell my old 20GB iPod. Any takers?
lillian13: (Default)

The apartment is still a mess. I have conquered approximately 5% of it.

I killed my watch. I had some plastic bags hung over my forearm, and one of the handles got wrapped around the little knob on the side and pulled it right out. In the parking lot. In the dark. Oh, well, I asked my sister-in-law for one for Christmas. Though Swatch has some nice ones on sale...I'm just gonna feel naked without one on my wrist.

When I left for work this morning it was 78F. The front --a real blue norther--came in earlier than they thought it would. By the time I left the office it was 42. With a 20-30 mph wind.* It's now raining off and on and just below freezing. But never fear! By the weekend it will be in the upper 60's again. (However, it can keep raining just as long as it wants to. We really need it.)

Man, I love South Texas in the winter. Gives a whole new meaning to "bipolar".

I have been watching Leverage and loving it. Go watch it!

* I, of course, went to work in a t-shirt and capri pants. I still ran errands after work--I just kept moving and it wasn't too bad. I may dislike the cold, but I am almost perfectly physically adapted to it.
lillian13: (Default)

First of all, thank you, my [livejournal.com profile] hohohos  Sekrit Santa! Thank you for the tools! They will be used and appreciated!

I've been getting ready for the show this weekend. I have mentioned that I have a big show this weekend, right?

I got quite a bit done this week, and I may get more done tomorrow after I load the car. World's Best Niece and I have to be there at 7 am Saturday. Eeew. It's gonna be chilly, too. Set-up in gloves! How fun!

I got into my Spring Jewelry class--Chasing and Repoussage. The Events planning class I wanted to take doesn't appear to be offered in the spring, darn it.

Made the mistake of going into Terra Toys tonight. Picked up some stocking stuffers. Stared longingly at some of the Sanrio stuff and once again managed to get away without buying any Playmobil knights. Went to Kohls and returned the purse/wallet. (They were close, but not quite right.) The lady at Kohls saved my ass, too--she went through all the pockets in the purse I was returning and turned up my 8 Gb flash drive! *facepalm*.

And I now have a ticket to a showing of Spamalot in March! Next up, Avenue Q, but tickets won't be available until January.
lillian13: (tact)

I used Baker's Secret on the pan, and the recipe I used baked up fine. I forgot that you really need to depan within 10 minutes, but I'm not sure that had anything to do with the slight sticking problem I had. I got about 80% of the cake out in 1 piece, and the rest in 3-4 pieces. It looks OK, and I should be able to disguise cracks with berries and sugar. The only time the damn thing came out perfectly was the first time I used the pan--I know now that it was taunting me.

I bought a Very Large Turkey (aka the Rock) tonight, along with stuff for my share of the sides. L and J and J's mother and I are doing Thanksgiving, and we decided to have a turkey big enough for leftovers for 4 people. Luckily my brother has a chest freezer and said I can store the Rock (and the green beans) until it's time to thaw.

...and it looks like my sister (and her husband) will be able to go with my brother and his family to Alabama for the Big Family Get-Together. I can't--it's too hard for me to get Wednesday off. I hope this helps her get her head together. She got her second DWI a few weeks ago, and I really hope it's finally scared her completely straight. She's going to counseling and seems to be serious about quitting drinking. I really really hope it sticks this time. They need to leave that craphole of a town they're in and get a fresh start somewhere else. *sigh*

Millennium Com = zzzzzzzzzzzzz.

Seriously, sales were very low. I think it's because all the RPG players (who were ensconced upstairs) would come down, see only miniatures and landscape sellers, (and players) and leave. The minis guys were almost all older, pretty conservative, and not interested in t-shirts. But we got some customers, and I told Mr. Pegasus what to send next time, so maybe we'll sell more. (I did sell some jewelry, though, which was a nice bonus.)

Saw a couple of folks I hadn't seen literally for years; "met" a co-worker there, and talked to one of my ex-playtesters (from when I worked for Steve Jackson Games). The cheap motel's convention center had free high-speed wifi, which meant my almost 12-hour Saturday* was at least semi-interesting. The World's Best Niece brought me dinner, too.

My car now has new motor mounts! It's almost like having a new car! The first time I started it up after I got it back I thought it hadn't started at all, it was so quiet. Which tells me how long the old mounts had been loose. o_O  Next on the list is a bunch of stuff around the radiator, but BobbytheMechanic will get me a quote on that.

I saw Quantum of Solace with my brother last night. I can't figure out if it was a lame Bond movie or an exceedingly clever one. (After remembering where I'd seen one of the writers' names before, I'm edging more towards "exceedingly clever".)

We got the new Star Trek trailer, and my brother made a little "meep" noise and started chanting "Coming at Thanksgiving!" under his breath until the release date of May 09 came up. He was quite disappointed with that. He can be such a geek about some things.

Now I need to make vet appointments for Ripley the Wonder Cat and her Lumpen Sidekick, Slinky. And make a cake tonight for the Departmental Thanksgiving Potluck tomorrow. I am once again attempting to use the Bundt Pan of Doom. Wish me luck.

* Seriously, the posted hours were 8 am to 9 pm. I came in at 9 and could have come in at 11. The reason? They run games in the dealer's room. Not just demos, but actual games. Really crappy use of space in my opinion.
lillian13: (Default)

Got the car's new passenger side rear view mirror installed this weekend. I'm ordering new motor mounts today, since the bonus check came through. Yay! I'm also now seriously contemplating a new (used) washer and dryer, as the dryer works when it wants to and the washer has a tendency to dribble water into the tub. Then I may just throw caution to the winds and buy an iced tea maker. Whoo hoo!

I'll be selling t-shirts at Millennium Con this weekend; a gaming/wargaming convention here in Austin. I have an email in to the Vendor Coordinator, since the website lists the Saturday hours as 8am to 9pm! Which is just crazy. But it's extra cash, which will come in handy (see car and appliances above). I'm whipping up some dice-related earrings and more dice necklaces for it, just for fun. But if the hours are really that long, there had better be free wifi in that Dealer's Room, or things could get ugly.

Finally received feedback on my presentation at work. One said it was "refreshingly short", another that it was "too short". But it got positive feedback overall, which was nice. If I do one at all next year, it will be as part of a team.

Did you know that RediWhip makes chocolate whipped cream? It's, um, pretty good...I haven't tried it on my Scharffen Berger hot chocolate yet, but I may later on in the week, if it cools down enough. (Seriously, this makes great hot or cold chocolate. It's amazing.)

Vote!

lillian13: (pratchett)
OK, obligatory vote-reminder done. :-)

I voted on the 25th, so I feel remarkably detached from all the hype and hoopla. I also lost my "I voted" sticker, so no donuts or ice cream for me--probably for the best!

Got a lot done yesterday--put up the show stuff in the storeroom, got my mammogram (yay digital imaging!), grocery shopped, hit Fry's for ink and other things, did laundry.

The dryer doesn't work, even with coaxing. I'm trying to decide whether fixing it is even an option, when I can find a decent used one for around $100. Anybody in Austin looking to get rid of their electric dryer?

Back to the gym today. I have been remiss for far too long, and I'm really getting tired of the Fat Suit.
lillian13: (income)
Got up and out earlier than I had originally planned--I was going to print up some quickie Wheatsville flyers to pass out, but my frickin' printer ran out of black ink. So I loaded everything onto my memory stick and went to the 24-hour Kinkos that's on the way to Fiesta Gardens. Wound up printing too many, in retrospect, but I'd rather have too many than not enough.

Saw an absolute TON of folks I had not seen in literally years--Brenda from my time at SJG, Eric and Lisa, the Hackenburgs....seemed like every 10 minutes I was getting up and squealing someone's name.

Once again, [livejournal.com profile] vickita earned her angel's wings. This time she went and got me chocolate gelato. My love knows no bounds.

Best Band Heard: Still Jiggernaut!

Weather was very fine, if a little breezy early on. (Everything was very dusty by the end of the day, as it always is at ACF.) Sales were quite good; only about $15 off of Saturday's total, which is great for a Sunday.

I was amused to hear some vendors complaining about sales--frankly, the ones that complained the loudest were the ones with the most generic merchandise. You know, celtic knot earrings, generic silver jewelry, crappy imports, etc. I was one of a very few folks who actually made what they sold, and we all did pretty well. And I got a zillion compliments, most of which were sincere. My ego is fat and happy right now.

I resisted the impulse to buy A Certain Friend's Child a drum. Actually I resisted buying a drum for one child and a tin whistle for the other. I suspect even being separated by several states would not have saved me...

World's Best Niece and her friend came to help tear down and it was greatly appreciated! And I they both want to help out at Ikkicon. Yay!

I have Monday off. Laundry, groceries, cleaning. And the yearly duck-squeezing appointment. Awesome.
lillian13: (obama)

I went to MakerFaire today, and it was made of awesome. Lots of very, very talented people and completely amazing things (like a "life-sized" Mousetrap game). I am affiliated with a group of artists that were selling there, so I will have to get in next year, even if it is awfully close to the Austin Celtic Festival. It was totally cool, and if you live in a town with one, you should go, it's completely worth the admission (I got in free, which made it even better).

In order to one-up the catapult book I bought for T's kids last year (which they loved and took to Cub Scouts and built things out of), I was going to get the book M-80 Rocket-Powered Skateboard, but I figured I wanted to live to see the New Year, so I got a kit that makes a moving wooden robot and a book on how to make more toys like that. Hmm. I wonder if [livejournal.com profile] seperis 's or [livejournal.com profile] dremiel 's sons would like it....? (Just kidding!) I came back with good handmade soaps, local honey, local biscotti, some "Smoky Asian Jam" which I am using on chicken this week--hey, no lunch!--a t-shirt (of course), and four blocks. I would have gotten all 5 but they ran out of one. If I wore any jewelry but my own these days, I would seriously wear these earrings.

The presentation I had at work on Friday went off very well. It was kind of short, but I'd rather be short and interesting than overlong and boring any day. I got lots of nice feedback, everyone laughed when they were supposed to. More importantly, they didn't laugh when they weren't. Speaking in front of people has never been a problem for me (hello, many years as a theater major), so I wasn't that worried about it. But it was nice to see I hadn't lost my touch.

I am running FrameMaker training all week. Monday through Thursday, because of course the two managers can't give me the two new hires at the same time every day. I will be very hoarse by the end of the week.

And because I'm still evil, I leave you with this:

lillian13: (human stupidity)

Ye gods, what a day.

The World's Best Niece had to move this weekend--seems that the crappy, crazy boyfriend she had from College Station has graduated into being a Crazy Stalker Ex-Boyfriend, complete with calling her so often she had to change her number, filing false police reports, etc. She now has a very slick Taser. And, as of this afternoon, a new apartment, one with an attached garage so she can park her car and go inside in peace.

She's 21. Welcome to the party, sister.

And her mother, who should totally know better, was getting on her ass about the new place. It was "too small" and her brother's room was "really tiny". I didn't say anything, because WBN is very good at giving more than she gets in those situations. I love my sister-in-law, but she tries too hard to live in a world of fuzzy puppies and kittens and white picket fences. To the point where she willfully Will Not Get It, sometimes. Yes, it cost a lot of money to break the lease and move your daughter. Would you rather have saved it and had her attacked? *facepalm*

To add to the stress, The Nephew a) had not packed anything and b) had stayed out all night at his girlfriend's place. He showed up about 11 and was forcibly detained by his parents--he was all ready to just breeze in and leave to work a double shift. Didn't happen. (Insert rant here about parents who have let his behavior slide for 18 years...)

We finally got everything moved by 2. For all that my brother is a Heap-Big-Wig Naval Officer, he is terrible about organizing this kind of stuff. He just didn't do enough moving in college, I guess. This tiny move? Should have happened in about 3 hours, tops. Too much flailing, too much drama, not enough warm bodies. I told her to call me first, the next time she has to move.

Then I had to run all the errands I was going to run early in the day, before the Longhorns Game Day craziness started. Got my hair cut, picked up a car part waaay out in Del Valle, finally found (hopefully) an acceptable present for my brother's birthday. Found the last of the beads I need for the lanyards I owe to the Sweet Charity auction. Got the Brobdingnagian Bards new live CD, Death to Unicorns, With Laughter. Will post it if anyone wants it.

However, I have now had a slice of Hyde Park Fudge Cake and am contemplating pizza. Going to MakerFaire tomorrow (free tickets, yay).

My name is not common. As a matter of fact, it's part of my user name. (No, not the 13 part. I'm not a hot bisexual on House.) Growing up, it was very, very uncommon to run across another person with my name. The year I was born, it was somewhere around #600 on the baby names list.

Imagine my suprise to find it at #33 for 2007. The mind boggles. Of course, it is after the ever-popular Nevaeh, but above Kaylee, which means I win over Firefly fans.

No word from the Cherrywood Art Festival, which probably means that for yet another year, I am not good enough for them. Feh.
